I think I've officially figured out not only what I want to do but now examples of why I think I'd be good at it. Last week Emily Bjorklund got married. At her reception I ran into Suzi Olson (pretty sure she doesn't go by Suzi anymore, but that's what she went by back in HS and when we worked together at Zions Bank). She's been working in D.C. and Oakland and she's not sure she wants to stay in her current industry forever. I told her that's how I was with banking. I always knew it wasn't what I wanted to do for a living, but I said it took me till I was 27 to realize what it was even though I took the classes I needed to in college.
Today Kirk, one of the consultants in our Orem office, called me over to his office to ask me about a spreadsheet I had created. It has 3 sections; one for the total medical premium, one for an employer's contribution to the total, and the employee's portion of what's left. He copied the sections to a total of three different plan designs but couldn't get the totals to match up. Now, there are two ways to calculate the numbers; by % or by fixed dollar amount. Our problem was with the fixed dollar amount.
We sat down and he showed me how he changed it and what he was trying to show. Within a couple of minutes and looking at the "if/then" formulas I created, I found my mistake. Then came the moment of truth -- the test. Everything added up. Woo-hoo me! Kirk's comment was, "I'm so glad you're so good at this. See I just take your skill and pass it on as mine".
I think I have proof, or rather validation, of why I want to be a consultant. I feel I have the analytical skills to dive into a (for example) medical plan or a fairly complex spreadsheet and understand what it's saying AND be able to interpret what it means. Then, I have the communication skills to sit down with someone and explain it in 'lay-man's' terms.
It only took me 30 years, 4 months, and 21 days. Now, to make a decent living doing it. I guess this is where the "work" part comes in.
Like George Castanza wants to be an architect -- Hi, I'm Shawn. I'm a consultant.
